Wellness Policy Reminder – Birthday Celebrations

We understand that celebrating your child’s birthday is a happy occasion and maybe something you want to share with your classmates at school. Please note that food is not allowed for birthday celebrations as part of our district’s Wellness Policy. Only non-food items will be permitted at school.

Non-food suggestions include coloring books, crayons, books, school supplies, stickers, pencils, erasers, whiteboard markers, etc.

Any food items brought to school for birthday celebrations will be sent home or returned to parent(s).

CHULA VISTA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT SUMMARY OF WELLNESS POLICY (BP 5030)

The Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) recognizes the link between student health and learning and is committed to providing a healthy school environment that promotes student and staff wellness, proper nutrition, nutrition education, and regular physical activity. The CVESD Wellness Policy (BP 5030) was revised August 9, 2017. It updates and reflects changes to all federal, state, local, and District guidelines. Additionally, the policy was re-organized and headings added for clarity and organizational purposes.

Summary of Key Wellness Policy Guidelines- School and District Community:

  • Prohibiting food items in celebration of a student’s birthday on the school site during the school day.
  • Permitting no more than two parties/celebrations with food for each class, per school year, to be scheduled after lunch whenever possible. All food items should be store-bought, pre-packaged, and/or pre-wrapped for food safety and allergies.

*The complete Wellness Policy can be found here.

WeTip

The Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) is proud to introduce a new anonymous reporting program called WeTip which launched on November 1, 2023. WeTip will enhance safety at CVESD while actively empowering students, staff, and community members to maintain a safe and secure environment. The WeTip link to the anonymous report can be found here.

Key Points About WeTip:

  • CVESD encourages all students, staff, and community members to be vigilant and report concerns – if you see something, say something.
  • Whether it’s a safety concern or any situation that raises suspicion, it can be reported quickly and easily online or through a phone call or text message.
  • Reporting a tip is easy, anonymous, and confidential.

Volunteers Needed!

Our school loves Family Volunteers!

  • Loma Verde’s PTO needs volunteers to help run its events. Please contact the school office at (619) 420-3940 or our PTO Vice Chair Mr. Faustino Lopez at top.lopez@gmail.com with the days/times you are available.
  • We need parent and community volunteers to help monitor student safety in the parking lot around our school at drop-off and dismissal time! Our Wildcat volunteers work with school staff to serve as an extra set of eyes to keep kids safe outside of our school gates. Any interested volunteers should contact Mrs. Watson or Mrs. Elsa Turner in the office or call (619) 420-3940.

If you are able to volunteer for any of the events below, please let us know!

  • Parking Lot Safety 7:40-8:00 a.m. or 2:30-2:40 p.m.
  • Morning Running/Walking Club 7:30-7:55 a.m. Monday-Friday (club supervision needed to monitor students who run laps)

  • APEX Fun Run – Thursday, December 7, 8:00-10:30 a.m.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS!

Students need to be at school every day and on time. Please make sure your child is here by 7:55 a.m. and lined up on the blacktop (1st-6th grade) or by the classroom (TK-kinder). Let’s continue to improve our attendance! If your child must be out sick, please contact the office at 619-420-3940 or lomaverdeschool@cvesd.org to excuse the absence. Remember to bring a doctor’s note. Vacations, dentist, and doctor visits should be scheduled during our breaks whenever possible. If your child misses school, they are missing out on important learning! Our school staff will be meeting with parents/guardians, calling home, and doing home visits for students who are chronically absent.

Week #16 TK-6th grade attendance average: 93.1% (Goal is 98% or higher)
Yearly to date (7/19/23-11/17/23) average attendance: 95.8% (Goal is 98%)

WAY TO GO!!!! Look at the classes with attendance at 97% or better for week #16 (11/13-11/17):

  • 98.6% Room 505 – Ms. Nevarez – 4th grade
  • 98.2% Room 501 – Mrs. Pulido – kinder

Please visit this page for helpful resources on improving your child’s attendance: https://www.cvesd.org/parents/attendance-information.

  • LET’S CONTINUE TO IMPROVE OUR ATTENDANCE AT LOMA VERDE!
  • Students should only miss school if they are sick. Those with symptoms can return with a negative Covid test, no fever for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication, and symptoms improving. STUDENTS DO NOT NEED TO BE SYMPTOM-FREE to attend school. We have plenty of rapid tests at school–just ask in the office. If you have a special circumstance and need an independent study, please let us know.
  • We begin a secure campus at 8:00 a.m. Parents/guardians must exit promptly at 8:00. Thank you.
  • Students can arrive as early as 7:15 a.m.
  • FREE breakfast is served from 7:15 a.m. to 7:50 a.m.
  • Absences that are not reported will be considered UNEXCUSED. After 3 unexcused absences and/or tardies you will receive a truancy letter.
  • If you pick up your child/children early and/or they are tardy for personal reasons this is considered unexcused.
  • Remember to bring a doctor’s note. Vacations, dentist, and doctor visits should be scheduled during our breaks whenever possible.
  • If your child misses school, they are missing out on important learning!
  • Our school staff will be scheduling SART (School Attendance Review Team) meetings with parents/guardians, calling home, and doing home visits for students who are chronically absent (missing 10% of school or excessive tardies).
  • Thank you for helping to get your child to school every day and one time!

REMINDERS

  • EVERY MINUTE COUNTS! School starts at 8:00 a.m. Students need to be on the blacktop at this time and teachers will walk them to class. We ask all parents to exit promptly by 8:00 a.m. so that we can lock the gate after the bell.
